Appointments

Questions to ask a renal dietitian

A dietitian appointment goes further when you arrive with specifics rather than a general worry.

Dietitians can only work with what you tell them. These questions are designed to turn a vague appointment into a set of concrete instructions you can act on this week.

Questions worth asking

  1. Given my current situation, which one or two things should I focus on first?
  2. Are there numbers you want me to track, and what exactly should I write down?
  3. Which of my usual meals would you like me to describe to you?
  4. Are there products or ingredients you would like me to bring in and show you?
  5. How will we know whether this is working, and when should we review it?
  6. What should I do if I cannot manage the plan in a busy week?

What to bring

  • Three ordinary days of food notes, not your best three days
  • Photographs of two or three packaged foods you buy regularly
  • Your current medicine and supplement list
  • Anything you have been told by another clinician that seems to conflict
